F1 stock car racing has been one of the most spectacular forms of motorsport in Britain since 1954. Within the confines of a quarter-mile oval track, where contact is encouraged, it is gladiatorial combat on four wheels – and the hits come thick and fast. Its popularity surged in the 1960s and continued – despite the country’s economic upheavals – through the 1970s and into the 1980s.
And for a select group of drivers, the ultimate goal was to paint the roof of their car gold by becoming world champion.
This is their story.
